Is Christmas chic?

Is Christmas chic?

Red and green seem to be the only colors worth acknowledging this time of year. While Christmas has become a season rather than just a holiday, the expectation of dressing festive increases for the days leading up to and the day of Christmas. Yet, festivity does not acknowledge the difference in Christmas celebration. Everyone celebrates differently, some staying at home in pajamas all day or others being whisked away to a family party as soon as they wake up, and all require different ‘festive’ attire. In this blog, I bring to you multiple outfit choices for your Christmas celebrations, allocating examples depending simply on how casual your celebration will be. I tend to stray away from loud Christmas wear, such as heavily patterned sweaters, instead opting to focus on the seasonal color palette instead, which will be shown below. These outfits are also based on indoor temperatures, and are heavily layered with coats and mittens if I must go outside.

For a simple gathering with friends, spending time baking with your mother or even relaxing at home Christmas day, loungewear can become a cozy and stylish way to express Christmas festivity. While loungewear may not be viewed as typical Christmas wear, focusing on colors such as red and green allow you to express and feel some Christmas spirit without going over the top. As seen below, I focus my outfits around these statement colors, allowing grey to offset their tones. I enjoy the subtle festivity of these outfits, as well as the flowing comfort they provide. I pair my green long sleeve with soft grey sweatpants, and my red low-rise leggings with a grey off the shoulder sweater. As you may notice with all of my images, I am simply wearing my slippers, but if donned these outfits outdoors I would have paired them with my UGG boots.

By moving out of complete comfort, it becomes simpler to fit the festive dress-code. I tend to celebrate my Christmas’s in casual wear, jeans a simple way to teeter the line between nice and completely relaxed. Jeans are also versatile, pairing well with both the tight frame of long sleeves and the bagginess of sweaters, as well as being compatible with the necessary green and red seasonal palette. These casual outfits are perfect for last minute Christmas shopping, picking out your tree, or in my case, family Christmas parties. For casual wear, I pair my light wash jeans with a red and white striped long sleeve, and pair them again with a green cardigan with a white long sleeve underneath. I feel that my doc martin boots would pair well with both of these outfits, nicer than UGGS but not exuding the fanciness of heels. As seen in previous blogs, I find cardigans the perfect layer, and would highly recommend them for the holiday season.

An outfit you will not track me down in this holiday season is the ‘nice outfit’. In the past I have often donned these outfits for Christmas parties or just the holiday season in general, but this year my get-togethers seem to be more casual, and therefore, I will stick to the outfits exemplified previously. Of course, that will not stop me from giving all of you an example for your own holiday events and celebrations. For a Christmas party, nice dinner, or just wanting to feel dressed up, the black mini skirt is a clear choice. Able to pair well with both with red and green (apologies for not presenting a green option below as well), the versatility of the black mini skirt turns it from simply a closet staple, into a holiday staple. For winter, when wearing a skirt you must also pair them with black tights, bare legs a trend abandoned in fall. I match my black mini skirt and tights with a red cable knit sweater, and in the second outfit with a white long sleeve and of course, one of my favorites, the red cardigan.
